We love Maths!

At St Joseph's Nundah, we are passionate about fostering a deep and functional understanding of mathematics in our students. Our Numeracy and Maths program is designed to help students grasp essential mathematical concepts through engaging and effective teaching strategies.

One key focus of our numeracy approach is ensuring that students develop a strong foundational understanding of maths. This includes learning different ways to make 10, mastering efficient addition and subtraction strategies, and understanding place value. By building these core skills, we equip our students with the tools they need to succeed in more complex mathematical tasks.

Every Wednesday, our students participate in Targeted Maths Groups. During these sessions, extra teachers join each class to create smaller groups, allowing for more personalised attention and support. These smaller groups are instrumental in helping students consolidate their numeracy understanding through hands-on manipulatives. This tactile approach makes abstract concepts more concrete and accessible.

In our Targeted Maths Groups, we emphasise the importance of communication and collaboration. Students are encouraged to talk through their thinking and explain their reasoning to each other. This not only reinforces their own understanding but also helps them develop critical problem-solving skills. By working together and discussing different approaches, students learn to appreciate the diverse ways in which mathematical problems can be tackled.

At St Joseph's, we believe that a strong numeracy foundation is crucial for our students' overall academic success. Our dedicated teachers and innovative teaching methods ensure that maths is not only understandable but also enjoyable. This is why we love maths at St Joseph's – because we see our students thrive and develop a genuine appreciation for the subject.

We are proud of our Numeracy and Maths program and the positive impact it has on our students' learning journeys. By focusing on foundational skills, personalised support, and collaborative learning, we are preparing our students to excel in mathematics and beyond.
